ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - A woman who was just out grocery shopping has been busted and is now facing deportation. Her family says its all a misunderstanding.
Christian Caamano says he and his wife are not thieves. ""I could understand if we fled after taking the bottle of shampoo, but we voluntarily walked in and offered to pay for it not knowing it was there.""
On Wednesday, Publix security officers in Altamonte Springs say his wife, Dasha, tried to steal a few bottles of shampoo.
Caamano says she made an honest mistake.
""It's got big baskets on the bottom of it that have mesh, so everything's visible but the bottle of shampoo had rolled under where she was sitting so it wasn't visible to my wife. I guess they just saw her put it there.""
But Publix doesn't see it their way. According to a police report, employees told police that Dasha stuffed their stroller with goods, nearly $56 worth of hair products.
In a statement, Publix says, "" We have prosecution guidelines but cannot divulge them to the public.""
So police arrested Dasha and threw her in jail. From there things got worse. When he went to pay her bail, they told him they had to hold his wife on an immigration detainer.
Dasha came to the United State from the former Soviet Union when she was 13. The report says she has different aliases and two social security numbers.
But Christian says they've been married for 3 years.
""I tried explaining to them I tried giving them the paperwork all of her proper immigration paperwork to the judge, to state attorney to deputy, no one was willing to take it.""
He says all of this was a simple misunderstanding that has gone too far. Now, his family is paying the price.
""I just want my wife back.""
