ICE to Cooperate with Another Georgia Sheriff

ATLANTA – The Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office became the fifth police force in Georgia with the power to investigate the immigration status of detainees and deport undocumented immigrants, reports Mundo Hispánico. Sheriff Butch Conway worked for more than a year to get the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to approve participation in the 287(g) program, an agreement between ICE and local police agencies. Last week the federal government approved his petition, along with that of 10 other localities in the country. The news came as a shock to local immigrant rights groups who had been opposing participation in 287(g). “The news impacts us because we know our people will suffer the consequences,” Teodoro Maus, spokesperson for the Georgia Latino Alliance for Human Rights, told Mundo Hispánico. “The sheriff has bad intentions with 287(g).”

New agreements are with the Monmouth, N.J. County Sheriff’s Office, Rhode Island Department of Corrections, Delaware Department of Corrections – Sussex Correctional Institution, Houston Police Department, City of Mesquite, N.V., Police Department Morristown, N.J. Police Department, City of Mesa, Ariz. Police Department, Florence, Ariz. Police Department, Guilford County, N.C. Sheriff's Office and the Charleston County, S.C. Sheriff's Office.

Without any other information to go on, I'm posting here, so please forgive the intrusion.

I'm wanting to speak to whomever is in charge of the Fire Coalition in Georgia and I want to get involved in whatever way I can to make a difference, for me, and for my childrens future.

Could someone please pass along a phone number or contact information for the administration in Georgia so I can get involved.

Thank you
